Build a Mahogany Outdoor Bench

In this class, you'll build a real piece of outdoor furniture from genuine african mahogany (or a simialr species) — a wood prized for its beauty, durability, and natural resistance to weather and rot. When you're done, you'll take home a handmade bench that's built to live outside for years and look better with every season.

This is also one of our most comprehensive skills classes. Building a bench from scratch takes you through nearly every fundamental woodworking operation — from begining to final finish. If you've ever wanted to understand how a woodworking project comes together from start to finish, this is the class to take.

What You'll Learn:

Shop safety and equipment operation — How to safely use the key shop tools involved in the build, including the miter saw, table saw, drill, orbital sander, and clamps

Project planning and layout — How to read plans, think through the order of operations, and lay out your cuts before you make them

Lumber selection and grain reading — How to look at a board and understand its grain direction, figure pattern, and how to orient it for the best strength and appearance

Cutting to length and width — Making accurate, square crosscuts and rip cuts to turn rough lumber into project-ready parts

Shaping for appearance — How to ease edges, round over corners, and shape the wood so the finished bench is comfortable and pleasing to the eye

Assembly and structural reinforcement — Putting the bench together with solid joinery and fastening techniques that make it strong enough for everyday outdoor use

Sanding techniques — Progressing through grits to create a smooth surface that feels as good as it looks

Finishing for the outdoors — Exploring different finishing options that protect mahogany from the elements while enhancing its rich, warm color
